Detentions are legal, they can be given it is usually a policy of the school, there is no law saying it is not illegal, they actually have weekend detentions now, where you can be submitted into a special weekend school it is run by the NSW state government. Writing lines, is also a standard punishment, it is the whole point of being punished, it is not supposed to be comfortable. Reply to this

Detention is legal for sure if the pupil stays to avoid exclusion. The position is not so clear on physically enforced detention. If a pupil refused detention, the school would normally allow him or her to leave, and substitute a temporary or permanent exclusion. This does not mean they get time off, but that they have to go through the hassle of attending a new school, for a few days, weeks or permanently. Obviously this means that in theory, adult university students could be detained under threat of expulsion. Common sense means that this does not happen; although I have heard of a 21 year old female at a Baptist University in the American Bible belt having to write a 2000 word essay for having booze in her room. She was an English student doing a one term exchange in her final year of a Business Studies Course, and is known to me personally. This was 12 or 12 years ago. Reply to this

Interesting story, would like to see more. I was never really bad in school, however, I once agreed to a similar "punishwork" with a girlfriend of mine and I had to write lines.
Also, there is a Yahoo club called "Written Punishments" were lines are assigned to those who misbehave. In addition there is FOW group (Fond of Writing) where there is a typing program for typing punishwork. It's very interesting. Reply to this

Does anyone out there think a 2hr after school detention is the correct punishment for not handing in homework? I had to write out lines 500 times which took forever. and also my hand hurt for days afterwards.
my parents think 2 hours is a long time and would be better split into 2 weeks? and writing lines is not very productive.
Also the cleaners at school can into the room and cleaned the floor, desks etc.... while i was sat there writing lines!

Your parents are turning you into a wimp. I think 2 hours detention is fine for what you did. If you don't like it, hand in your homework next time. As far as the cleaners coming into the room while you sat there, so what? I did janitorial duty a few times when I had detentions, so just be glad you were only writing the lines, and not doing the cleaning. Reply to this

What do you guys think the worst type of detention is? I experienced several types: -Just sitting there, awake, head up, for a long time doing nothing -Being allowed to do homework or even sleep, so long as we didn't get up or make noise -Writing lines -Doing work details
The worst was just sitting there doing nothing. Time passed so slowly. At least with doing work details, there was something to take your mind off the slowly ticking clock. Getting to sleep or do homework was the best (and least effective) detention. I really didn't mind those too much unless I actually had to be somewhere that afternoon. Reply to this

I agree. The worst detention was sitting there with nothing to do but listen to the ticking of the clock. We had a couple of teachers who would make you sit with your arms folded, looking straight ahead, in total silence. Any fidgeting and you'd get a whack with the cane and another five minutes. It was soooo boring and, as a punishment, very effective! Reply to this

I got loads of after school detentions usually for 2 hours and a good few weekenders. Weekend is probably the vest deterrant and should be brought back. You had to wear full school uniform - blazer, shirt & tie (plenty of stick from the other kids, maximum embarassment!) My punishments usually included lines of mental arithmatic. My crimes usually failing to submit homework or not wearing uniform correctly. Swearing to the teachers once resulted in 3 weekend detentions. I think it tought me to become more disciplined and respectful which is badly lacking in schools today. I don't agree with corpral punishment, but extended use of detentions would work, it made me think twice. Reply to this

Among the two detentions I ever had in my school years, the nastiest was to learn by heart a two-page French poem by La Fontaine (I was in a French school) whose style is as difficult as Shakespear's. I had one hour of detention. But the headmaster told me that I would continue learning it at home and that the next day, I had to come to his office and recite it to him before going to classes. It was for climbing over the gate to get into the school grounds because the envigilator was late in coming to unlock the gates for us. That was my punishment for not arriving late to a lesson. Had I waited for the envigilator and arrived late for my lesson, the teacher would have simply scolded me. Well, I did my punishment and the headmaster suddenly became much nicer. Since I was usually well behaved, this is my nastiest punishment from my school days. Reply to this

Our after school detention classes were usually 30 minutes and sometimes you were given double detention and would be there for an hour. An individual teacher detention where you would have to report to a specific teacher after school and be supervised by them tended to be an abitrary length and was usually given because the teacher wanted to deal with something specific rather than the sort of general misbehavior that might be committed in class. In the general detention class boys were just expected to sit and get on with some schoolwork or write lines if that's what they'd been told to do. The teacher supervising the class woudl call the detention register and then usually sit and do some work. Any boy who spoke or appeared not to be working was usually given the cane or slipper. If you were given detention with a specific teacher the detention would normally be a time in which the teacher would punish you for something. The punishment might be lines or corner time and would usually involve at some point, some degree of corporal punishment too. Perhaps a caning or a spanking for younger boys. Some teachers would give you a long telling off with alot of smacks. Reply to this

I'm from Australia and go to a private school, and I got a 3 hour after school detention today. The head teacher had to call my parents and advise them of my detention and reason. They wouldn't let me do the detention another day, at least I could've talked to my parents, but the head teacher called my parents, the phone was also on loud speaker, so it was very scary. The reason why I got the detention was, well I was tagging the desk, the teacher walked out of the class, and I decided to tag the desk. Only to find she saw through the window, and send me to to the head teachers office. He wasn't impressed at all. So the teacher that spotted me doing it, wanted me to be punished for it, that afternoon, so she advised of the head teacher of the punishment. Then he wasn't happy with the punishment, so he placed me on a all day Saturday detention for this Saturday, which is from 9am to 5pm. I got home and my parents chucked a fit, and as it's my cousins wedding this Saturday, I won't be able to do the Saturday detention, and my parents aren't going to sign off on it. Instead they decided they will call the head teacher, and tell him to place me on 3 weeks Saturday detention and a weeks after school detention till what ever time he sees fit. What I had to do for my detention today is clean the tables. And wasn't allowed to leave until the tables where clean, so I actually ended up staying for about 3 hours 45 minutes after school today.
However I do deserve it, and I got caught doing a stupid thing. Which means now my 3 Saturdays are going to be wasted. Reply to this

Yeah I always thought detention was fair. Saturday detention was comparably rare as most pupils managed to get out of them through some stupid get out clause. I never tried to get out of them cos if you've done something wrong there has to be justice and I felt better for taking my punishment and hopefully offering some justice to whoever I'd offended, that's thinking of my racist behaviour which earnt me saturday detention. I wanted people (and the other pupil's family) to know I got the strict detention and that I had no quarms about it. I guess theres something of satisfaction in that, maturity I suppose over the other kids who winged like hell! It earnt me more respect in the longer run. But as I said schools should be empowered to impose these long strict detentions and there should be no getting out of it. Reply to this

I have read the posts here and see why some kind of limitation has to be imposed on students who persistently disrespect teachers, or omit to do their school work, however I strongly disagree with holding a child back in school against parents and students wishes, parents ( specially parents of more than one child), have their whole day mapped out with other activities, and having your child at school for extra time, can mess up everyones schedule, my twin boys strive to get all their work done, with my supervision, however they have had detentions for not completing work, because this involved work that had not been covered in lessons yet... on one occasion, one of my sons did his homework, but made a mistake of going one page ahead, on the next morning , he took the right pages, and was told it was ok, by the teachers mistake, he got a detention letter, but as she had said it was ok he assumed it was not valid anymore, missing this one detention, he then went on to have a one hour detention, then the next day 2 hour detention, I spoke to the teacher, the teacher had accepted this was a mistake, he was told to go home after the first hour... only to get yet another detention, for not being there for the second hour!!!! ( both these detentions were supervised by the School Headteacher) I have asked for a meeting, and on that meeting, asked for their policy on detentions, so we can avoid them in future, nothing has been sent to me, but a new warning that seen as my other son was late into classroom (30sec after bell, and 1 minute after bell) after lunch break, he would also be given a detention.... is it unreasonable that i would want to know their policy? are they not being too rash and negative with my sons, they are polite, and they do their work... I don't have to wonder what is done to the children who have behaviors problems, these, because they need careful handling get away with walking out of the classroom, as they answer their mobile phone, stabing themselves with compases, and generally being very disruptive, and no teacher can discipline them, to avoid violent reactions. what does that say to the children who are mild mannered, and are standing by witnessing this? Adding to my last post, what can a parent do, or a student for that matter, if the school is being petty and overgenerous with their detentions? I am not there to verify that my son was in class just off the bell, but I know they let me know and admit promptly when they are in the wrong. Incidentally, just as this matter comes to a head, I get a letter from said school asking me to sign a Covenant (thats a contact) to commit me to donate £10 for each of my twins per month for 7 years to "help" the school building project.... I meant serious opinions, anyone with common sense knows that over punishing has the opposite effect, it desensitizes kids, to the point where they done care anymore, so where, then is the point doing it at all... punishments are most effective when handed out fairly, even sparingly, so the offending person actually feels bad about it, not fall into a habit... by the way, if you run one km over speed limit, you don't get fined, do you even drive? the legislation is 10% over the limit, to allow for speedometers inaccuracies. Hi Ruby, was your detention on the same afternoon or you had to take a detention slip home for your parents to sign? I got several detentions and sometimes Im kept afterschool for an hour or so without any detention slips and sometimes I have to take a detention slip home. Really depends on the teachers mood, and how serious the offence is, if im usually kept afterschool on the same afternoon mum knows im on detention as we have had to sign a form in the beginning of the year saying that the teachers have a right to detain us afterschool for upto an hour without any notification. I've got a detention just about every day this for the next 2 weeks, including a month of Saturday detentions as I didnt go the Saturday detention I had last weekend, which was from 9am to 1pm, now I have to do 4 Saturday detentions from 9am to 5pm.
And if I miss them I get excepeled, so I did it on purpose, so I get the detentions, as I have the hots for a couple of the teachers. Including some of the female ones, as Im bi. Reply to this

My school has a traffic light system for detentions. You get a: Yellow Card- Minor Offence Red Card- Major Offence Green Card- Homework (Long Friday) You can also get a Saturday Morning. 3xYellow* = Red 3xRed* = EXPELLED 3xGreen* = Saturday MORNING You can also get an LRC detention which is for misbehaving in the Library and thats helping tidy the shelves add tables. We have a merit system a swell in our school for good behavior and detentions come with negative merits. YELLOW=-1 RED=-3 GREEN=-4 Saturday=-(UNKNOWN) It's really embarrassing when you get a red or green card because your head of year tells it to everyone in your class when he comes round to make sure you know you have one and theres no escape when you get an after school or sturdy morning because you get a letter home. I've never had a detention and I am in year 8. Detentions are really easy to get at our school and also they make you fill out the cards yourself so you acknowledge what you have done which helps some people. Reply to this

We have a similar system depending on what we have done wrong, however we have lunch time detentions as well in which also depends on the teacher that gave it to you, sometimes we are made to pick up rubbish or we have a yellow line that we have to stand on, rain shine or hail. Or we can spend it in the class room writing lines on the chalkboard.
If we get 3 lunch time detentions we automaticaly get an afterschool detention for an hour.
We can also bypass the lunch time detention and get an afterschool detention usually an hour to 3 hours. If it is an hour, usually we are held back the same afternoon, but anything over an hour we are send a letter home. Usually an afterschool detention goes to 5pm so close to 2 hours after school. 3 After school detentions results in an automatic Saturday detentions from 9am to either 1pm or can go upto 3.15pm or sometimes can go to 5pm.
Or sometimes you would just get a Saturday detention.
Then 3 Saturday detentions automatically result in Holiday detentions, where you have to attend school during the next school holidays when the teachers are there, which is usually a couple of days after school breaks of before school breaks. Or you can get a Holiday detention automatically.
During detentions it depends on who is in charge. Sometimes ive had to clean tables, toilets, or write lines, or copy lines, or face the wall, or stand on the yellow line, or pick up rubbish. Or just sit down or stand up and do nothing. Or can be a mixture of both. Generally if it is raining they make you stand on the yellow line. I recently just got a Holiday detention, just last week where I had to attend school for 2 days from 9am to 5pm, it rained one of the days and I was made to stand on the yellow line for about 4 hours in the rain, then I was called inside the office and was made to face the wall in the corridor until i was dry. So I was actually on detention from about 9am to about 6pm as it took a while for my clothes to dry whilst facing the wall.
I must admit I didnt learn my lesson, I got the detention coz I called one of the teachers a fucken stupid mole, I think she still is. Reply to this
